Lesson 9 – Isaac and Rebekah

God works his plan of salvation through the lives of Isaac and Rebekah. God’s plan for our salvation is fulfilled through Jesus, their descent.

Opening

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

This lesson will use the Bible, the Bible Discovery Guide and the Lesson 9 Leaflet from the Student Pack. The front cover shows how the artist sees Isaac meeting Rebekah, his future wife. Also paper and colored pencils or crayons will be needed.

Listen to the video "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow".

Read the First Article of the Apostles Creed and the explanation on page 3 of the leaflet.

What are some of the "countless gifts of love" that God gives you? They include the blessings listed in the First Article (house, home, body, soul, food, clothing, all I have, etc). God also provide parents, brothers, sisters, and other relatives.

Does God provide husbands and wives?  Yes, He will provide a wife for you, boys, or a husband for you, girls.

Prayer: Dear Lord, You always provide all that we need. Help us to be grateful for Your blessings and to never take for granted Your many gifts. Thank You for our families, for our homes, for clothing, shoes, food, drink, and all material things You give us. Most especially, we thank You for Jesus' death on the cross for our salvation. Through Christ, we pray. Amen.

God Speaks

We're going to see now how God provided a wife for Isaac.

Do you know her name? Rebekah

Read page 14 of the Bible Discovery Guide to learn a little about marriage in the days of Abraham.

What surprised you about marriage in Bible times? Some might include the young age at which people married and the fact that all marriages were arranged. In the past, although young men or women may have been able to express their desire to marry a certain person, the parents of the children still arranged the marriages.

Read Genesis 24:1-9.

Whom did Abraham ask to help him? His servant, the oldest in his household.

What did Abraham ask the servant to do? Find a wife for Isaac from their own land.

Abraham's faith again is evident because he trusts that God will make the servant's mission successful. Abraham was concerned that if Isaac married a wife from Canaan, where people worshiped many gods, he might be tempted to turn his back on the one true God. They lived in a heathen land.

ln verses 6-8, notice the strong insistence upon the promise God had given to Abraham. See also Deuteronomy 7:3 and 2 Corinthians 6:14, where God also speaks about the importance of choosing a spouse who is a believer in Jesus Christ.

Read Genesis 24:10-14

Where did the servant go? To Mesopotamia, Abraham’s homeland.

What did the servant ask God for? He prayed that God would lead him to the right wife for Isaac. He asked God specifically for a woman to offer to get a drink not only for him but also for his camels as a sign of God's steadfast love for Abraham.

Read Genesis 24:15-28.

In verse 15, God answers the servant's prayer even before he finishes speaking.  God is so gracious that He provides for the servant even before he has completed his request. This is also how God listens to us.

How does the servant know that Rebekah is the one that God has chosen for Isaac? She not only gives water to him but also offers to water the camels, exactly answering the servant's prayer.

Whose family is Rebekah from? Bethuel [beh THỌO el), the son of Milcah (MILL kuhhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivaDXu27_IY&feature=youtu.be">Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow".

Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, who provides everything we need, including the most wonderful gift of salvation through our Lord Jesus, please help us care for others, always showing trust in You to care for us and to help us the love of Christ in our lives. Through our Lord Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
